Film "Bread and Roses"
Hi! Today I'm going to talk about the film "Bread and Roses" (2000).
If I would have to decide if I liked this movie or not I really wouldn't know what to say. But one thing I am sure is that this movie is very interesting, because describe the opression of workers and the class conflict but also, the opression of inmigrant people and the patriarchal society in a very rude way, the real one. This is a story of the opressed people in USA.
One character who got my attention was Maya. I saw in her a woman who doesn't give up, a brave woman with an amazing strength who even with everything against her she would rise and stand up for what she believe. I think the scene who caught her essence was when she goes with Ruben to the School of Law for the first time and Ruben tells her he love her and she answer him that she is interested on Sam. In here, Ruben start to judge her and guess that the reason why she is fighting is for this guy. Maya doesn´t accept that, and make him understand that she is in the same position than him, that she is doing this for her and for her family, not for a man.
This is maybe my favorite scene 'cause retrait a woman who is being cuestioned about her principles, who isn´t being taking seriously just 'cause she is not interesnting in Ruben and for that, in his logic the only reason for what she is fighting and standing up is for a man. But Maya put him in his place, that is why I love this part.
One thing that I like of the movie was how realistic was interpreted the reality of this janitor workers and her work conditions full of injustice, It make us get emotional but without caricature this situation. Something that a lot of movies can't make.
But I have to be honest, there was one thing that I really hate about the movie and it was the importance who was gave to Sam Shapiro, as a character and inside the movie (situation). The logic of the white guy who come to save the day, he clearly came from a privileged context, he was nothing to lose, that's why I think it was a bad choice give him so many importance, the workers should be the stars, not him.
That's all for today!

I agree with you. The importance of Sam Shapiro was not really necessary, and including was annoying. All should hates Sam jeje.
